Specialized Physical Therapy offers innovative Parkinson’s treatment program

Press release:

Knock Out Parkinson’s
Local physical therapist provides programs to help in all stages of Parkinson’s

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Asheville, NC (November 17th, 2015) – Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nearly a million Americans. There is no cure for Parkinson’s but evidence has shown that people who participate in high intensity exercise programs make positive gains in all stages of the disease, as well as protect important areas of their brain.

Specialized Physical Therapy, located in the Gerber Village shopping center, offers a program to help in all stages of the disease. Each exercise works on a symptom: stretching is for their stiffness; footwork for balance; punching to steady their tremors; shouting to counter their soft-voice syndrome; and sparring for coordination.

The program, called “Knock Out Parkinson’s,” is a non-contact boxing program teaching patients footwork, punches, combinations, and various other boxing skills. Caregivers are welcome to participate in the one-on-one sessions. Training is a combination of cardiovascular exercise, weight training, balance skills, and boxing. Prepare to be challenged in a fun and encouraging atmosphere!

The mission of Knock Out Parkinson’s is to give people the power and motivation to battle Parkinson’s disease. The program hopes to improve people with Parkinson’s mental and physical capabilities through movement and enhance their quality of life. This is accomplished through an intensive program encouraging strength, power, speed, endurance, and fun!

“Together we can Knock Out Parkinson’s!”

What an amazing program. It is so great to see continued innovation in health care. There are so many great programs being created for patient’s with Parkinson’s. I’m glad to see a physical therapist has chosen to step outside of the box to deliver a unique treatment. I can only imagine patients are excited to come to sessions and empowered when they leave. Keep up the good work!

  3. I started helping with this program a few weeks ago. The smiles on our patient’s faces are enough to keep me going all week. I’ve started boxing training myself so that I can better assist with this program. “Kock Out Parkinson’s” has changed the lives of the patients who have walked in the door or Specialized Physical Therapy and has changed my life as well. I am proud to be affiliated with “Knock Out Parkinson’s” and Specialized Physical Therapy.

Very exciting to see creative physical therapists going outside conventional treatments. Physical therapy for Parkinson’s disease is great, but there seems to be limited carryover once the therapy is done. It is great to see a program that I’d have to imagine patients will be excited to continue forever! Great stuff. Glad to see it in Asheville.
