Subway Therapy’s Matthew “Levee” Chavez to launch local “Subway Wall” at
The Center for Art & Inspiration’s grand opening

Press release from the Center for Art & Inspiration:

It’s an invitation to write on the wall (actually on a sticky note for the wall) as you Express Yourself and meet the creator of the international Subway Therapy movement.

It’s all part of the Grand Opening of The Center for Art & Inspiration as it unlocks the doors to the new arts and entertainment destination at 125 S. Main Street in Downtown Hendersonville on Feb. 23, Noon to 4 p.m.

Creator/author Matthew “Levee” Chavez (SIGNS OF HOPE, ART IN ACTION) will be on-site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Chavez’s interactive art project, “Subway Therapy” began when he set up shop in a subway station at 14th St/6th Avenue and Union Square.

According to Chavez, “Subway Therapy is an immersive and interactive work aiming to help people smile, laugh, and feel less stress. It’s about peaceful expression and being part of a vibrant and diverse community. For some, it’s an opportunity to connect and have a conversation. For others, it’s a way to listen and empathize. It can be many things, for many different people.”

Subway Therapy began with only a table and two chairs. Participants were invited to have a seat and converse about whatever they wanted to talk about. It evolved after the election in 2016 when sticky notes were introduced to the project that reflected the thoughts of over 50,000 individuals from all over the world. Subway Therapy is an ongoing interactive and participatory public work. It happens regularly in New York, in various US cities and occasionally around the world.

And now Hendersonville, North Carolina.

The Washington Post calls Chavez’s project, “An international symbol of unity and expression.”

Join Chavez, sample the coffee and tea at The Artful Cup, browse the shelves of Malaprop’s Books, take a selfie or two…and be prepared to Express Yourself. Sticky notes provided!

Editor note: The Center for Art & Inspiration is spelled with an ampersand.
