Asheville’s 4th annual Turn The Towns Teal event is part of a national campaign to promote awareness of ovarian cancer and its silent symptoms. The disease is also overlooked and misdiagnosed. “Volunteers tie ribbons throughout town centers and distribute symptom cards during the month of September which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month,” says the campaign’s website.
“Turn The Towns Teal® was founded by Gail MacNeil of Chatham, NJ, who was inspired by her own experiences. During Gail’s ten-year battle with ovarian cancer, she realized first-hand that not enough was being done to publicize the symptoms of the disease,” says the website. McNeil’s daughter Karen lives in Asheville. It is in honor of Gail, who lost her battle with the disease, that local businesses “are being asked to display teal ribbons and the informative symptom cards for people to take. There is no financial obligation at all, unless donations care to be made to the organization,” says a press release.
Business participating so far include Asheville.com, Beauty Parade, The Honeypot, Nine Mile and Rise ‘n Shine. Any other interested Asheville businesses should contact Karen directly by email ashevilleteal@gmail.com.
