Press release from North Carolina Campus Compact:
University of North Carolina at Asheville junior Anja Mayr has been recognized for outstanding leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities with a shared commitment to community engagement. Mayr is a recipient of the network’s Community Impact Award honoring one student leader at each member school.
Mayr is one of 21 students chosen by their campus for the 2015 honor, joining more than 200 college students recognized by the network since the award was first presented in 2006.
After taking several Service-Learning courses, Mayr was struck by the great value of connecting academic study to community service experience. The realization motivated her to create and lead the first living-learning community at UNCA focused on Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Justice (LEAD). As the Resident Assistant for the floor and the Student Reflection Leader for the first-year seminar course, Mayr helps the 16 student residents examine root causes of complex social issues and explore how they might become change agents.
In the Asheville community, Mayr has served as a Girls on the Run coach for the past three years and as a mentor in the Woodridge Learning Center after-school program. A native of Charlotte, Mayr is majoring in Health and Wellness Promotion and Psychology.
Mayr and other Community Impact Award winners will be honored at the Compact’s annual CSNAP student conference, held this year on November 7 at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. The event will convene nearly 100 students and staff from more than 20 campuses in the network. In addition to awards presentations, the conference will include training on cultural competency, community engagement, and the “sustained dialogue” leadership process.
North Carolina Campus Compact, the state affiliate of the national Campus Compact organization, builds the capacity of colleges and universities to produce civically-engaged graduates and strengthen communities. Started in 2002 and hosted by Elon University, the statewide network includes 36 public, private, and community colleges and universities. UNC Asheville first joined the Compact in 2007.
