Vance Monument removal update

Press release from the city of Asheville:

South Pack Square will be opening by the end of day June 2 for a short period of time following temporary removal of the crane. The crane has been demobilized in order to make room for staging and loading the stones from the obelisk.

The crane is estimated to be back on site between June 7-9 to move the large portions of the monument plinth. South Pack Square will need to be closed again to stage the crane for this period. After the large portions of the plinth are moved to flat bed trucks, the crane will be demobilized, and South Pack Square will reopen.

Demolition of the masonry core for the plinth and the monument base will need to continue through the week of June 14. South Pack Square will remain open during this phase of the project, with the demolition crew working primarily from within the existing construction fencing, using smaller equipment that will not require the closure of South Pack Square.

Total removal of the monument is expected to be complete sometime during the week of June 21.

North Pack Square will remain closed for material staging and for the duration of the project.

There is no additional cost for the adjustment in timeline for the project.
