Press release from Western Carolina Community Action:
The rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine is gaining momentum as three providers, Pardee UNC Health Care, Advent Health and the Henderson County Health Department open call centers and schedule appointments online. Groups 1 and 2 include healthcare workers and seniors age 65 and up. Unfortunately, many seniors across Henderson County face transportation barriers that may keep them from receiving the lifesaving vaccine.
WCCA’s Apple Country Transportation is helping to break down the barriers that many people, including seniors, face in trying to receive their Covid-19 vaccination. Beginning immediately, Apple Country Transportation will offer free rides to Henderson county immunization clinics for vaccine appointment holders. Individuals with pre-scheduled immunization appointments can call Apple Country Transportation at (828) 698-8571 to arrange transportation. The complimentary service will continue to operate throughout the immunization period and is open to Henderson County residents.
Keith Logan, Executive Director for Council on Aging of Henderson County notes that there are over 350 homebound clients and more than 100 individuals who participate in congregate meal programs in the county. “We’re all doing our best to ensure our most vulnerable residents have access to the vaccine,” Logan said. “WCCA is helping to fill a big need by providing transportation to seniors who no longer drive!”
Jimmy Brissie, Emergency Services Director for Henderson County is helping to coordinate the county’s efforts to ensure a fast and efficient distribution as vaccines become available. “We appreciate the partnership with Apple Country Transportation in providing this critical service.” New supplies of vaccines are being received weekly. Brissie asks people to be patient as they work through the scheduling process.
