WCU hosts The Langston Hughes Project, March 19

A multimedia concert featuring Langston Hughes’ “jazz poem” is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 7:30 p.m. at Western Carolina University’s John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center.

Press release from WCU:

The Langston Hughes Project, a multimedia concert highlighting a “jazz poem” written by the late poet, novelist, playwright and social activist Langston Hughes, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Western Carolina University.

The performance of Hughes’ creation “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz” features Malcolm-Jamal Warner and the Ron McCurdy Quartet. “As Your Mama” is Hughes’ homage in verse and music to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at the beginning of the 1960s.

Warner first rose to national prominence starring on the television series “The Cosby Show.” His jazz band Miles Long has performed in major jazz festivals, including the Playboy Jazz Festival, and has opened for Earl Klugh and Luther Vandross.

Tickets for the performance at the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center are on sale and may be purchased at TicketReturn.com. Admission is $5 for WCU students and $10 for non-students.

The event is part of the Arts and Cultural Events series at WCU. For more information, visit ace.wcu.edu or contact Francis Ann Ortiz-Pineda, assistant director of campus programming in the Office of Leadership and Student Involvement, at faortizpineda@wcu.edu or 828-227-2612.
