Press Release
From Western Carolina University:
CULLOWHEE – The 2013-14 First Thursday Old-Time and Bluegrass Jam Series at Western Carolina University’s Mountain Heritage Center will continue Thursday, April 3, with a concert featuring the traditional string band Crooked Pine.
Crooked Pine was originally organized in 1974 with founding members Craig Bannerman, bass; Marion Boatwright, fiddle; and Frank McConnell, guitar. The group played many venues across Western North Carolina over the years and evolved with new members, but eventually disbanded.
In 2010, however, Crooked Pine reformed with the three original members, and banjo and mandolin player Troy Harrison has been added to the mix. From its home base in Brevard, the band has been performing at festivals, dances and other events in the area and was recently featured in a promotional video created by the Transylvania County Chamber of Commerce.
The 7 p.m. concert at the Mountain Heritage Center will be followed by an 8 p.m. jam session in which local musicians are invited to participate. Pickers and singers of all ages and experience levels are invited to take part in the jam session, which also is open to those who just want to listen.
The event is free and open to everyone. The Mountain Heritage Center is located on the ground floor of WCU’s H.F. Robinson Administration Building. For more information, call the museum at 828-227-7129.
