BlogAsheville Awards announced

On Saturday night, scores of area bloggers and their friends and readers gathered in downtown Asheville for the third annual Extravablogiversapaloozathon. The event featured bands, beer, bawdy stand-up comedy by George the Bastard and (drum roll, please) the 2008 BlogAsheville Awards.

More than 600 people voted in the annual contest, which highlights the best, worst and most curious corners of the local blogosphere. The winner for Best Overall Blog was Ashvegas, produced by the fevered fingers of Mountain Xpress multimedia editor Jason Sandford. (His blog was also honored with two other awards: Best Local Happenings and Most Likely To Have New Material.)

In related news, Xpress took the occasion to announce the winners of the Best Blog category in our annual Best of WNC poll, the full results of which will be published Oct. 15. And perhaps it was no surprise that Xpress readers, likewise, gave Ashvegas the nod as the number-one blog in town. Finishing second in our poll was the multiauthored blog Scrutiny Hooligans. Edgy Mama, which is penned by Xpress columnist Anne Fitten Glenn, grabbed third place.

The full list of the BlogAsheville winners can be found below.
