Letter: The butchering of Beaucatcher Mountain

Graphic by Lori Deaton

The cartoon last week [“Balanced Meals,” April 26, Xpress] by Brent Brown was a sad reminder that the so-called “steep slope ordinance” needs to be revisited.

For living proof, I invite you to drive up to the top of Alexander Drive. At the corner is Windswept Drive to the left and Reservoir Drive to the right. Go in either direction and look over the edge of the road. You will see where Beaucatcher is being deforested and bulldozed for new home construction, all plans apparently meeting city specifications. Am I the only one who is concerned about this?

I’m concerned about all of Asheville being bulldozed and butchered. People gripe about Wicked Weed selling out to AB? Asheville is selling out, too, to big businesses and calling it “progress.” There are no excuses for decimating a city in the name of money. No understanding of the word “cumulative.”

    Concerned? Sure.

But let’s face it, as long as people decide they want to live in Asheville there will be a need for housing for them to live in so I’m not sure what kind of solution the letter writer has in mind.

and in big city fashion they are about to lessen the lot size requirements for city building causing higher density with land values to increase greatly, love it. thank you city council!
