Letter writer: What do you love about North Carolina?

Graphic by Lori Deaton

Hi, my name is Erin. My class is reading A Walk Across America by Peter Jenkins. My class is supposed to choose a state to research. Additionally, we are supposed to write to a newspaper in that state, hoping to get letters from the readers telling what they love most about that state.

I hope to learn as much as possible about North Carolina. It would be awesome if some of your readers could write a letter or postcard to me telling me what they love about the state of North Carolina.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

I once met a woman at a party who said that North Carolina was a great state except it had too many trees.

    I love NC because;
it’s “Religious Right” influence over state politics
    It’s regressive
It’s Anti GAY (Only state to establish an amendment to ensure that Gays will never be able to marry; although SCOTUS changed that)
It’s Anti Medicinal Marijuana (Except for children who suffer from rare forms of epilepsy)
    It’s Super Corporate friendly
It’s Anti Union AKA Anti workers right
It’s the lowest paying State for teachers

    Just to name a few

LOL, why yes, because your worldview is like so progressive but in reality is and continues to destroy the nation lulz. Oh I know, let’s talk about demographic changes but not one that benefits the nation. Oh no, let’s talk of one where we allow low wage slave labor in and then come to their rescue with welfare LOL. And then whine there’s no money for teachers who can’t teach squat because the state sets the agenda on top of a bunch of 1 parent kids who are lost. Thanks people like you who think money is the solution when you continually destroy anything and everything in your path and purposely blame others for it lulz. But let’s then pretend MJ is for like medical uses when in fact it’s a cover for a bunch of stoned up fools who can’t function and then blame others for not paying their fair share LOL.

    • The Real World

Welcome to the Bible Belt, Jason. The belt spans at least 8 states and whenever seeing a USA map in a newspaper, online or on a TV news segment of where issues are moving forward (end of life options, marijuana legalization, reproductive choices and on and on) notice the big gapping hole of the Southeast.

Practically, it makes sense given much of the population of the BB spends alot of time invested in the people and life of over 2000 years ago.

So pack up and move to San Francisco. If you’re going to be so intolerant towards people who don’t share your views, you might as well find happiness where likeminded people live.

  3. The politics SUCK! including in Asheville which isn’t as different as it likes to pretend. The sounds and outer banks look nice on a map and the climate is pretty good, but I’m going west as soon as the zoners and bureaucrats let me sell out of this southeastern hellhole. Nevada is far better, far more secular with real liberty where it counts. I can’t even ride my moped here.

Oh YA! AND state law requires bars to have memberships if they don’t serve food…. dumbest s**t I’ve ever heard of. My Family from Canada came down and were besides themselves when we all walked into a bar; and were asked for membership….. the SOUTH; Where small government, is the biggest.
