Edgy Mama: love thy veggies
“Eat your veggies!” It’s a refrain that rings out in homes all over the country at least once each day. Well, in most homes with kids.
This weekend on a shoestring
This weekend, float the river, take a hike, catch some local tunes or meet your new best friend, all for less than the price of parking downtown. While you’re here, share your own budget-friendly events in the comments section below.
Not too Kool
Volunteer members of the festival’s board were receptive to bringing in the 53-year-old hip-hop performer, famous for his 1996 hit “Let Me Clear My Throat,” but in the end … (DJ Kool photo by Tim Smith)
Autumnal fun
Summer may be flying by, but don’t worry: the heat of August and the cooler months ahead promise lots of festival fun. We’re making plans now for a full season of events. We’re wild about Goombay, that celebration of African and Carribean culture (the dancing! the costumes! the food!) that happens downtown on The Block. […]
A unified vision
Uncle Mountain performs with a disarming ease that makes it seem as though the trio was born playing breezy folk rock. And while congenital folkie is a stretch, it's not as far from the truth as one might expect. Dan Shearin and Ryan Lassiter have known each other for nearly 15 years, and they’ve been […]
Smart Bets: The Last Laugh
The Magnetic Theatre's artistic director, Steven Samuels, returns to the stage for the first time in two dozen years in The Last Laugh, which he also wrote. In it, he portrays lead character Chuck Wiles, "the outrageously gay, pot-smoking leader of a renowned but impoverished comic theater troupe that teeters on the edge of ruin […]
Thy rod and thy staff
The night sky was black velvet, stars scattered like diamond chips. I could sense the bear more than see it: Quicker than anything else its size, it was in the tent with me. Grabbing my arm in its mouth, it jerked me around like a child holding a rag doll: violently, rapidly, up and down. […]
Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler Aug. 10-16: Help, Snowflowers, Destinations, Mountains, Glee and more
Lots of titles this week—six of them, in fact. We have four mainstream ones—The Help, 30 Minutes or Less, Final Destination 5 and Glee: The 3D Concert Movie—and two art/indie films—The Last Mountain (Fine Arts) and Snowflower and the Secret Fan (The Carolina). I’ve no earthly idea why The Help opens on Wednesday, but it’s perhaps just as well with this much. Then again, except for movie critics, I don’t see a whole lot of crossover appeal here.

Weeknight events in Asheville
Maybe your schedule allows for going out during the week. Maybe you’re on vacation. Maybe you just like burning the candle at both ends. If so, here are three early-part-of-the-week events worth staying out on the town for (including The Prids, pictured here).
In the case of suicide: to publish, or not to publish?
A man committed suicide by jumping off the Smokey Park Bridge this week. Should Xpress have published his name?

Onto the next stage
Performing in the play Shear Madness must be a bit like taking on Bill Murray's role in Groundhog Day. You do it over and over, night after night. You can attempt to alter the course of the plot (Madness has some built-in wild cards) but the end result is more or less known. And then […]
Part and parcel
The Buncombe County commissioners unanimously approved a $10 million economic-incentives package for Linamar Corp. July 26, as part of an agreement with the Canadian auto-parts manufacturer announced last month. On June 28, the commissioners agreed to buy the former Volvo plant in Skyland for $7 million. Two days later, they announced plans to sell the […]
Farm fixer-upper
Old houses aren’t the only “fixer-uppers” out there. Just ask longtime Asheville musician and radio host Laura Blackley, who purchased neglected land in Candler with her partner, Cindy Jordan, in 2006. Their hope? A small family farm. “When we started, we wanted to do and grow everything, and I do mean everything,” says Blackley. But […]
Musical Missed Connections
Lonely Tonight OK, first impression not so great. Did you really think you’d get away with putting all your wet boxers in my dryer? I mean, how long do you think it takes a girl to smoke one cigarette? Anyway, the fact that someone had sewn your name, Harold Melkins, into every pair touched me, […]
The Ultimate Air Copy Editor
Mountain Xpress Editorial Assistant Jaye Bartell threw himself into the Ultimate Air Dogs competition on Sunday, July 31. His jump? Thirteen feet.
Part and parcel: $10 million in incentives seals Linamar deal

Who’s afraid of hip-hop? City thought DJ Kool “too big a risk” for Bele Chere
City staff considered DJ Kool, a 53-year-old hip-hop performer famous for his 1996 hit “Let Me Clear My Throat,” too much of a risk to play Bele Chere, emails obtained by Xpress reveal. The emails also illuminate a deeper conflict concerning hip-hop acts playing Bele Chere, which critics say revealed outdated prejudices.
