New York-based eight-piece funk-pop outfit EMEFE is not exactly new to Asheville. From shows at Asheville Music Hall to kicking off last year’s RiverMusic series, the band has made the round of local stages. EMEFE returns to Pisgah Brewing Co. on Wednesday, May 6, just a day after releasing a new self-titled full-length album.

Smart bets: Dirty Dozen Brass Band
“This is a special collaboration of forces in Asheville — Isis [Restaurant & Music Hall], New Mountain, Pisgah [Brewing Co.] and FATE come together for a evening of brass funk,” says a press release. The star in that equation is, of course, New Orleans-based outfit Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In celebration of its 35th anniversary, […]

Whole Foods, Pisgah Brewing team up for beer dinner
When Whole Foods Market opened late last summer on Tunnel Road, the company said that in joining a beer city like Asheville, it would bring its A-game. Of course, that implies a comprehensive beer selection, complete with growlers to go. But what sets the Tunnel Road store apart from other Whole Foods stores across the […]
The cure for cabin fever: December 26 events
After 24 hours stuck in the house with family, too much pie and wrapping paper wreckage, it’s time to venture out. By December 26 you could probably use a dose of live music, craft beer and people who aren’t related to you. If that’s not the case, bring the relatives with you — the day […]
Beer Scout: Cold Mountain and more
You never know when winter will hit in Asheville. This year, with early November snow, it seems the upcoming release of Cold Mountain from Highland Brewery is right on time. Community liaison Drew Stevenson says there’s even more to look forward to this year as the company plans to expand the release celebration at the […]
Beer Scout: Beer at the library
As a kid, the public library was a magical place. It had endless shelves of colorful adventures, and it was a place to go for story time. As an adult, some of us still use the library for more than voting. They have those old-fashioned paper books and audiobooks, after all. However, not many of […]
Beer Scout: Pumpkin for your pint
Pumpkin-spiced lattes, pumpkin Oreos, heck, even pumpkin croutons: If you can eat or drink it, someone is trying to make it with pumpkin. When it comes to beer, pumpkin ale tends to elicit a love-it-or-hate-it response. Some order a seasonal beer for the only time all year while others scoff at the style. Wherever you […]
Acoustic Asheville: Dangermuffin
By Jesse Hamm Folly Beach, S.C. is not only the official beach destination of most of Asheville, but the home of Americana roots-rockers Dangermuffin. According to the trio’s bio, their sound “encompasses ska, calypso, and even Southern rock, often within the same song.” And Relix wrote, “Just like many a funny named band before them […]
Smart bets: Old Crow Medicine Show
You know Old Crow Medicine Show, even if you think you don’t, because of a little song called “Wagon Wheel.” It’s been sung by every busker on every street corner, and more recently covered by Darius “Hootie” Rucker and blasted from every mainstream country music station. The seven-piece Old Crow Medicine Show got its start, […]
Showreview: Trampled by Turtles at Pisgah Brewing Company
by Brandon C. Bouchillon Trampled by Turtles is slowing down. Known for firing off punk-inspired bluegrass diddies, the group’s new album, Wild Animals, feels like a sea change. It’s more controlled than the ones before it. Gone are the torrents of fiddle and mandolin, the notes now sparse and atmospheric. There’s more standing around. And […]
Smart bets: Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers
Before singer-songwriter and keyboardist Bruce Hornsby (pictured, lower right) topped charts in the 1980s with hits like “The Way It is” and “The Valley Road,” he was a session musician for the likes of Sheena Easton. Hornsby also performed with The Grateful Dead and put out solo work before forming his current band, The Noisemakers. […]
Smart bets: Seun Kuti
“Prince of Afrobeat” Seun Kuti joins Egypt 80, the band of his legendary father Fela Kuti, to create a powerful and high-energy sound with a distinctly political message. With his latest album release, A Long Way to the Beginning, Seun aims to inspire his listeners to fight for social justice. “In Africa today, most people are struggling […]

Someone to drive you around from brewery to brewery while you liberally sample? Well, we’ve got that too. Brews Cruise, started by Asheville local Mark Lyons, provides an insider’s take […]
