Downtown needs more grocery stores

We have all these new grocery stores opening in Asheville, yet we have NO grocery stores for the residents in the downtown business district. The French Broad Food Co-Op and Amazing Savings [recently renamed Hopey & Co.] are too far to walk and too close to drive and find parking. This affect’s Battery Park Residents, […]

Smart Bets: Johnny Neel

Songwriter and musician Johnny Neel is probably best-known for his work with Dickey Betts and Gregg Allman. Thanks to those relationships, in 1989, Neel was invited to join The Allman Brothers Band. In addition to touring with that group, Neel also lent his other skills: He co-wrote the Allman Brothers' 1990 hit single "Good Clean […]

Conflict resolution

Local band Knives and Daggers is many things to many people. But one thing it’s not about is dangerous weaponry — though co-guitarists/songwriters Lauren Carol Brown and Kevin Stanford joke about incorporating knife and dagger imagery into a future show. “A lot of people who come to see us say, ‘We were expecting it to […]

THE FAMILY KITCHEN

I once read a science fiction novel where quiche was the pizza of the future. I don't remember much else about the book, but the quiche idea stuck with me. The beauty of quiche, much like pizza, is that you can eat it with your hands. What differentiates it from pizza is the protein-and-veggie-to-carbohydrate ratio. […]

Now see Momo disappear into picturesque scenes captured by his owner, Andrew Knapp. Knapp and Momo were stationed in Asheville during January — a brief respite before a tour for Find Momo, Knapp’s photography book starring his canine companion. It came out March […]

BEER SCOUT

Craft Room Opens in South Asheville If you live within 10 minutes of downtown or West Asheville, there’s no shortage of options for fresh growlers of beer. Bruisin’ Ales stocks an ever-changing selection, Asheville Growler and Appalachian Vintner both fill to order and, of course, there are all the breweries. But head down to Arden […]

Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler March 12-18: Need for Better Father Chemistry Club

Where did all these movies come from? That’s a rhetorical question, but there are six of the things this week — six. I know rabbits that don’t breed like that. (And before anybody asks, Veronica Mars is a limited release and to the best of my knowledge is not opening here — at least not this week.) We’ve got three art titles, two mainstream titles and one that isn’t really either one. Come with me and I will explain.
