Over the last few weeks, a range of local notables have been participating in the “Ice Bucket Challenge.”
Started by the nonprofit ALS Association to raise money and awareness to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a lethal disorder also know as Lou Gehrig’s disease, participants agree to be dumped with a bucket of ice water. In the process, they challenge others to donate to the association or opt for the freezing dousing.
As of Aug. 21, the ALS Association had raised $41.8 million since the creative marketing campaign started July 29. That’s compared to $2.1 million during the same period last year.
Anyone active on social media recently has probably noticed videos of the ice bucket spectacles marked with the hashtag #icebucketchallenge.
Here’s a sample of some of those videos posted by locals. Feel free to post links to more in the comments section at the bottom of this story (Xpress may then embed them into the body of the post).
