Adorn Salon owner Rebecca Hecht, who recently garnered at least 3,800 signatures on her petition to ban chain stores from locating in downtown Asheville, created a ‘Love Asheville Grow Smart’ Facebook group on Friday, Aug. 28. The forum, she hopes, will foster discussion on strategic and purposeful growth of downtown’s business landscape.
“We seek to promote a balanced Asheville economy, support and promote locally owned business, and advocate for intelligent growth and development strategies in Asheville,” reads the group description.
In its two days of existence, the page has spurred responses from Asheville City Council candidates Gordon Smith, Rich Lee, Grant Millin and Brian Haynes, among other concerned citizens and business owners.

Have been there twice already. Love it down there and even though I live up here in NY had been thinking of trying to live down there I am retired so don’t need to find a jop and have both Social Securitu and a small pension Love everybody down there and of course. Hey Robert, thanks for stopping by. I moved to Asheville from NYC almost two years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I believe Asheville is home to many retirees like yourself. Gotta love irony! A group dedicated to promoting “local” and banning chains downtown, uses a closed group at Facebook arguable the most corporate site on the internet, thus shutting out people who refuse to become a product that Mark Zuckerberg sells to advertisers.
You are clearly a jaded local. A closed group simply allows for a screening process. Get real, Jaded. And facebook is useful if evil/corporate.
