Haywood Community College students recently competed in SkillsUSA NC, where they brought home four awards. HCC electrical systems technology student Cory Ross won first place and secured a spot in the national competition.
At the state level, other HCC top finishes included building construction technology student Wesley Sears with a second place finish, building construction technology student Damon McDaniels with a third place finish and electrical systems technology student Luke Lamar with a fifth place finish.
SkillsUSA NC is the largest showcase of Career and Technical Education in North Carolina. This annual leadership and skills conference brings together over 1,900 North Carolina high school and postsecondary students to compete in over 100 hands-on trade, technical and leadership contests. These contests span over 95 trade areas from construction, automotive and welding to drafting, public safety, cosmetology and more. Over 100 business and industry partners support the contests. The support of industry members as judges and contributors is essential to the students having the most accurate real-world experience possible.
The SkillsUSA NC electrical competition required participants to complete several tasks such as completing a written NEC code exam and wiring several circuits running conduit and NM cable. Examples of the requirements for those in the building construction competition were to build a replica of a house using a set of plans and build stringers for a set of steps. Competitors are graded on their attention to detail and the accuracy of their work.
“At the national competition, Cory Ross scored 928 points out of 1,000 against students from all over the nation,” explains Jennings Sizemore, HCC electrical systems technology instructor. “This was a great experience and will not be our last time at this competition. Next year we plan to bring home first place.”
