Press release from Evergreen Community Charter School:
As part of EL Education’s “Better World Day” on May 3, 2019 8th grade students will teach Kindergarteners about water quality and healthy streams.
WHO: Kindergarten and 8th grade students from Evergreen Community Charter School and Franklin School of Innovation
WHAT: Elizabeth Post, science teacher at Franklin, will be bringing her 8th graders to teach topics around water quality and healthy streams to Evergreen Kindergarteners. This activity will happen in Haw Creek, below Evergreen Community Charter School, and will include a “trash clean up” at the park (around the stream, Bullman baseball field, and East Asheville Recreation Center pool).
This project will be one of hundreds of projects across the country that commemorate EL Education’s “Better World Day,” a day of student service and civic action to create positive change in their communities. This partnership between schools connecting students around the importance of water quality in our community is a step towards building a more expansive network of environmentally literate youth. This project empowers young people to share their knowledge with others, creates a sense of playful exploration, and promotes stewardship of our natural resources.
WHY: Western North Carolina is home to one of the oldest rivers in the world, the French Broad River. The health of this river has been adversely affected from hundreds of years of human influences. Some of these factors include factories and mills, increased development, and farming and grazing. The river is a playground to many, but is unsafe to swim or fish in in many places due to pollution, trash, and silt debris. Watershed education is an effort to engage our youth and empower them to become stewards of this precious resource. By partnering Evergreen kindergarteners with Franklin 8th graders, we showing our kids that we are a community of learners and advocates working together towards a common goal: clean rivers and streams for all creatures!
WHEN: Fri., May 3, 2019. Morning, approximately 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
WHERE: Evergreen Community Charter School, 50 Bell Road, Asheville, NC 28805
