Press release from Asheville Symphony:
November 19, 2020 – The Asheville Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has released “Reflections of Healing.” This music video documents and showcases the dozens of public murals that sprang up throughout downtown Asheville this past summer during and after protests in solidarity with the Black community following the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others. The video project is meant to document these public works of art and this historic time.
The video is set to the music of George Walker, the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music, and performed by the Asheville Symphony. The music was recorded at Echo Mountain Recording on June 17, 2020.
This project was in partnership with the Asheville Art Museum and supported by the Asheville Area Arts Council, which joined with the Asheville Symphony in the shared belief that art captures moments in history and is a way for people to create awareness, change and ultimately, healing.
“We stand in solidarity with our Black colleagues in the community — artists, musicians, actors, administrators, producers, presenters, and trustees – and with them, we seek to break established patterns of injustice, intolerance, and inequality,” says ASO Executive Director David Whitehill. “
