A YouTube video posted by City Council candidate Jonathan Wainscott is sparking discussion and varied reactions on at least two social media sites: the Asheville Politics and West Asheville Exchange Facebook pages.
In the YouTube video, Wainscott identifies himself as a City Council candidate, talks about New Belgium brewery from his yard in West Asheville (with the New Belgium construction site clearly visible in the background) — noting its over-large scale, the number of incentives and the cost to the city the brewery will entail — while holding a NB Skinny Dip beer, which he begins to shake and then pops open while mimicking the act of sexual self-gratification and shouting “Tourism! Tourism!” Also, he’s wearing no pants.
Viewer discretion is advised before watching Wainscott’s video (entitled ‘Skinny Dip’), as many have found it offensive.
Here is the announcement Wainscott released earlier this month about his candidacy:
Long-time Asheville resident Jonathan Wainscott will be making his second bid for a seat on the Asheville City Council in the 2015 election. The focus of his campaign will be solutions for affordable housing, job training, and economic development for sustainable growth in Asheville and the surrounding areas. Issues of domestic violence and effectiveness of social services provided to Asheville residents will also be a major focus of the campaign.
Mr. Wainscott plans to file with the Buncombe County Board of Elections for his candidacy in mid-June. Further details about his campaign will be announced after he has officially filed to be a candidate in the Asheville City Council election for 2015.
I have also file a complaint with the NC Highway Patrol naming Marc Hunt, Gwen Wisler, Gordon Smith, Gary Jackson, Jan Davis, Julie Mayfield and others for participating in a prearranged competition of speed on NC roads and highways. This is a class 1 misdemeanor. Gordon Smith used a city-owned bus in the race.
Uh oh
