Free Range Asheville announces April events

Following the successful launch of Free Range Asheville’s inaugural season last month, this fresh arts organization announces a roster of adventurous cultural events in April 2016 featuring a conversation with critically acclaimed pianist and composer Jonathan Biss; a discussion and solo performance by MacArthur award-winning composer and saxophonist Ken Vandermark; a performance by the superb Tesla Quartet from New York City; and the Asheville debut of the Grammy award-winning vocal group, Roomful of Teeth.

JONATHAN BISS, APRIL 3, 2016, 7PM AT SOVEREIGN REMEDIES: As one of the first classical musicians to write and produce a digital ebook (kindle) and dedicate time to online teaching, pianist and writer Jonathan Biss has helped change how the world learns about and experiences classical music. Biss joins Free Range Asheville and WCQS Music Director Dick Kowal for an intimate conversation at Sovereign Remedies on Sunday April 3. Admission is FREE and seating is extremely limited. KEN VANDERMARK, APRIL 7, 2016 AT 7PM AT THE CENTER FOR CRAFT, CREATIVITY & DESIGN: MacArthur award-winning saxophonist and composer Ken Vandermark will perform his first solo performance in Asheville and discuss his new Site Specific book/CD publication. Site Specific is the largest solo document of Ken Vandermark’s career; a combination of 2 CDs of field recordings and over 200 pages of his photographs. Admission is FREE. TESLA QUARTET, APRIL 9, 2016 AT 7PM AT THE ASHEVILLE MASONIC TEMPLE: This exceptional program includes the Tesla Quartet commission by Matthew Browne, Great Danger, Keep Out (2013), a musical portrait of the famed scientist, Nikola Tesla; Joaquín Turina’s La oración del torero (1925), inspired by traditional Andalusian music originally composed for lute quartet and later arranged for string quartet; Marcus Goddard’s Allaqi (2009) which uses Inuit throat singing and folk songs as source material; and Maurice Ravel’s, String Quartet in F major (1903), widely regarded as his first masterpiece, this is the only string quartet Ravel wrote. ROOMFUL OF TEETH, APRIL 28, 2016 AT 7PM AT THE ASHEVILLE MASONIC TEMPLE THEATER: Roomful of Teeth is a vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from singing traditions the world over, this eight-voice ensemble continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning process, forges a new repertoire without borders. This engagement marks Roomful of Teeth’s Asheville debut; their program will include selections from their Grammy-nominated album Render (New Amsterdam Records, 2015) and an appearance by Pulitzer-winning composer and North Carolina native, Caroline Shaw. Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, and $15 for students.
