Health insurance industry critic Wendell Potter to speak in Asheville April 10

Press release from Healthcare for All WNC:

Wendell Potter, a former Cigna Health Insurance Communications Executive, and the author of Deadly Spin, an acclaimed expose of the health insurance industry, will be speaking in Asheville on April 10, Wednesday.

Transforming Healthcare in America: The Struggle for Medicare for All will be presented at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation [2 PM] and Lenoir-Rhyne University [AVL campus] at 7 PM in the Upstairs Conference Rm. He will also be broadcast live from Blue Ridge Public Radio on NPR’s The State of Things.

According to former U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller [W.Va.], “Wendell Potter has transformed the national debate over health care when he stood up and told the truth about the health insurance industry. By breaking the insurance industry’s code of silence and explaining to Americans how health insurance companies put profits ahead of patient care, Wendell has showed extraordinary courage…”

The Medicare for All Act 2019 was introduced in Congress in March by Primila Jayapal, Congresswoman from Washington State, and currently has over 100 co-sponsors. There is currently unprecedented national support for Medicare for All: 70 % of Americans now support a federally managed health care system, based on traditional Medicare, but offering expanded services for dental, vision, mental health, and long term care.

Mr. Potter is a champion for bold reforms, not half-measures: ‘…Business owners are struggling to provide health insurance to their employees, workers’ take-home pay is shrinking as their premiums go up…doctors and hospitals are drowning in paperwork dealing with insurance claims departments, and more than 80 million people lack adequate health insurance…Reform is desparately needed.”

Wendell Potter is currently President of the Business Initiative for Health Policy, and Founder of Tarbell.org, a reader-funded journalism project on healthcare reform. His visit to Asheville is sponsored by Healthcare for All WNC, a regional chapter of Physicians for A National Health Program [pnhp.org.].
