From The Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute:
New scigirls program year begins with
“drone discovery” programRosman, NC (September 13, 2016) – Area girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to kick off another school year of SciGirls programs with “Drone Discovery” September 27, from 6 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Transylvania County Extension Office, 98 East Morgan Street, in Brevard. SciGirls is co-hosted by the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) and the Transylvania County 4-H.
“This will be the first SciGirls program for this school year,” says PARI Director of Learning Experiences Christi Whitworth, “and a perfect time for any girl between the ages of 9 and 14 to get involved with SciGirls by joining us for an evening of fun and learning. Our September experience shares the 2016 4-H National Youth Science Day with an activity called ‘Drone Discovery’. We will learn how drones and remote sensing can be used to solve real-world problems. The SciGirls will take images with a remote camera and practice planning a flight for a mock drone. The activities will help the girls learn to explain how a group can document a community issue like potholes in a road, collect data on the problem and help develop solutions based on what can be learned from the data. Prior participation is not required, so we encourage all girls ages 9-14 to join us for an evening of learning about science by engaging in fun projects.”
The monthly SciGirls programs are co-hosted by PARI and Transylvania County 4-H, and affiliated with the national effort sponsored by Twin Cities Public Television to change the way girls think about science.
SciGirls events are typically scheduled each month during the school year. The participation fee is $10 per student. Program details, specific hours and registration details can be found in the Event Calendar on the PARI web site, www.pari.edu. Area teachers and parents are asked to encourage girls who may be interested. The national SciGirls web site is http://pbskids.org/scigirls.
