Roots + Wings School of Art and Design holds Community Art Lab Day, July 19

Celebrate the new permanent home of Roots + Wings School of Art and Design (573 Fairview Road, Oakley) during Community Art Lab Day on Sunday, July 19. All ages can participate in free making labs including drawing, screen printing, card making and more.

Press release from event organizers:

Roots + Wings School of Art and Design — WNC’s innovative art and design based school for ages three through adult — has packed their endless collection of art and design supplies and moved from shared space at the Cathedral of All Souls to a permanent home: their Creative Campus at 573 Fairview Road in Oakley. The Asheville community is invited to celebrate and create with them on July 19, from 2 to 5 pm, at the official launch of their new campus.

The event will feature free “making labs,” where all ages can try their hand at a variety of artistic mediums—from drawing to screen printing, card making to sculpture, and much more. Attendees will also be invited to participate in a communal art project that will be installed in the new facility.

“We’re thrilled with this new location,” says Founding Director Ginger Huebner, “because it allows for more opportunities, like the Grand Opening, to engage with our community.” She adds, “That’s what Roots + Wings is all about: nurturing and encouraging the natural creativity within students through community collaboration and dynamic art and design education.”

In addition to an expanded Visual Arts Preschool, the Roots + Wings Creative Campus offers an after-school Community Design Lab, more space for Creativity Camps and Design Studios, teen and adult workshops, birthday celebrations, and more. Off site, they will continue to provide an after-school Community Design Lab at Vance and Claxton elementary schools and their INNOVATION HOUR™—inspired, hands-on experiences for students in their school classrooms. Roots + Wings also works in partnership with local art and design professionals to help bridge the gap between education and the real world and connect children to creators and makers in their community.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase from food trucks, and the Grand Opening will also feature live music. Attendees will be the first to hear about the school’s new programs. More information can be found at rootsandwingsarts.com and via updates to their Facebook and Twitter pages.
