Music Professor Christine Boone Presents Lecture, Gendered Power Relationships in Mashups, at UNC Asheville on Nov. 22
Christine Boone, assistant professor of music at UNC Asheville, will present a lecture, Gendered Power Relationships in Mashups, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in Lipinsky Auditorium on campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
“Mashups are musical hybrids: more than simple pastiche, they can represent complex musical and social relationships,” says Boone. “I will discuss a handful of notable tracks, analyzing how they create new meanings by placing men and women into surprising ‘conversations,’ exemplifying deeply complex and shifting gendered power relationships.”
Boone, who holds a B.M. in in vocal performance and a M.M. and Ph.D. in music theory, centers her research on popular music. She has presented her research on the Beatles in the United States and the United Kingdom, and her work on mashups has been published in a number of publications, including Music Theory Online. She is also a contributor to National Public Radio’s music game show, Piano Puzzler.
