Blue Ridge Rollergirls bout Ithaca on May 31
On May 31, 2014, the Blue Ridge Rollergirls (#43) will face the Ithaca League of Women Rollers (#79) at the U.S. Cellular Center in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. The first bout will begin at 6 p.m., and the second bout will begin at 8 p.m. Both the Blue Ridge All Stars and the Blue Ridge French Broads will battle the teams from New York in a fight sure to thrill loyal and new fans of the growing sport of roller derby.
The Blue Ridge Rollergirls All Stars will enter this tournament fresh off an undefeated performance at the Skate to Thrill roller derby tournament held in Wright City, Missouri, and the 2014 Florida Beach Brawl tournament, which hosted national and international roller derby teams. Though some of the bouts were close, Blue Ridge retained their winning streak to bring home six tournament victories. “We’re really excited to host a bout after coming off these big wins,” says Amanda “Rider” Burton, a jammer for the All Stars. “We want to show our loyal, local fans what we can do.” After this home bout, the All Stars will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, on June 7 to play Duke City Derby (#74).
The French Broads, Blue Ridge’s B-team, is equally excited to play the Ithaca League of Women Rollers’ SufferJets on Saturday at 6 p.m. “We’ve been training hard for this moment,” says Jennifer “Rolli Cannoli” Pillow, who acts as co-captain for the French Broads. “This is our time to impress.” Like the All Stars, the French Broads will also play June 7. They will travel to Hickory, North Carolina, to play local rival the Appalachian Rollergirls.
Blue Ridge always features a charity at each bout, and this time, the Western Carolina Medical Society will be receiving 10% of the proceeds. At halftime, the Urban Arts Institute will entertain the crowd. Bout tickets are $12 at the door, but Students (11-17 or with Student ID, including College ID), Military (with ID), Police/Fire/EMS (with ID), and Go Local Card holders will only be charged $10 at the door. Children 10 and under can get in for free. The league has “rolled local” in Asheville since 2006.
