N&O: Governor issues coal ash order

Gov. Pat McCrory said Friday he was kick-starting the process of closing all coal ash ponds in the state, since the House and Senate couldn’t reach a compromise.

The governor issued an executive order telling the state’s environmental agency to continue enforcing current regulations and to emphasize detecting drinking water contamination, the Raleigh News & Observer reported.

Environmental groups said that other than requiring well-testing, the order didn’t appear to tell regulators to do anything they’re not already doing.
