From a press release:
Opal String Quartet performances Oct. 25 & 26, Nov. 8
The Opal String Quartet starts its 9th season with three performances in Western North Carolina October 24, 25 & 26. An additional performance will take place on November 8. The chamber group will perform romantic masterpieces by Brahms and Bloch, as well as two brand new compositions by local composer Tim Winter of Saluda.
Winter’s works are jazzy, lush, intriguing, and create the perfect counterpoint for the deep sonorities of Johannes Brahms’ “C Minor String Quartet” and the plaintive “Prelude” of Ernest Bloch.
The Opal String Quartet, formed in Asheville in 2006, is a professional chamber ensemble based in Asheville. Known for its fiery intensity and polished precision, the OSQ is dedicated to bringing the art of chamber music to diverse audiences by performing in a wide variety of venues, from schools, bars, and art galleries to street corners and concert halls. OSQ members are active teachers in the Asheville area and are passionate about sharing the excitement of chamber music with young audiences. The OSQ serves as Artists-in-Residence for the educational outreach programs of the Asheville Chamber Music Society and the Asheville Symphony Guild, and have also conducted educational outreach performances in Transylvania county under the auspices of the Brevard Philharmonic.
Opal’s core members (Ginger Kowal – violin, Kara Poorbaugh – viola, and Franklin Keel – cello) will be joined by guest violinist Seth Gangwer for the performances. Gangwer is a stunning multi-genre performer and recording artist who just relocated to Western North Carolina from Nashville.
