At Artetude Gallery on Patton Ave., artist Leonid Siveriver blends mediums with his piece, “Motion.” Siveriver displayed a variety of pieces Dec. 5 during the last First Friday Art Walk of the season. (The gallery crawl series resumes again in April.) He said the idea of “Motion” came from photography — it’s a bronze casting of a man’s head, but it’s got a blur to it. “I wanted to show the same range of motion you’d see when taking a photo of someone with a slow shutter speed. It’s blurry when there’s movement,” Siveriver said.
The Ariel Gallery on Biltmore Ave. features contemporary fine craft — works of art that are functional as well. “We don’t feature fine art such as paintings, these are fine crafts rather than the traditional craft,” said artist Dave Vrooman, who designs jewelry. The gallery is a co-op, with everything local, artist owned and operated. “This gives us the freedom to indulge our creative side.”
At the Center for Craft Creativity and Design on Broadway, a traveling exhibit on contemporary quilts is there until Jan. 10. “Gee’s Bend: From Quilts to Prints” features quilts made by residents of Gee’s Bend, AL, an isolated island where the residents made their own style quilts out of necessity. “The residents of Gee’s Bend are known for their workclothes quilts. They used scraps of old clothes to patch them together and keep warm,” said Grace Reff, gallery associate. “These are very graphic, contemporary and modern-looking.”
