BREVARD – On Thursday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. the Brevard College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will perform in their spring concert, “Watching and Waiting.” The concert is free to the public.
The choirs include students of a variety of experience levels, and include students from several different majors across campus. Using differentiated instruction, Dr. David Gresham – professor of the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers courses – has been able to bring many different voices together and teach basic music knowledge.
The concert music will include a set of works by American composer Aaron Copland. The second set of Old American Songs includes his famous works, “Zion’s Walls,” “Ching-a-Ring Chaw,” and “All the Pretty Little Horses.” The choirs were featured in the symphonic winds concert last week, and performed the set of three Copland pieces along with the wind ensemble.
Recently, the Chamber Singers went on tour, offering performances for several high school groups and culminating in a workshop at the University of Georgia led by Dr. Gregory Broughton, which focused on spiritual music. The students found the performances to be extremely gratifying and worth all the hard work and effort put into learning the music.
Freshman Natalee Highman, a music major, is in both concert choir and chamber chorale, and said, “Working with Dr. Broughton was such a unique experience. We got a different perspective on our spirituals. He gave us physical exercises to create more of an ensemble feel. It was a really different style of work than we’ve done so far.”
Senior voice student Alicia Carland agreed wholeheartedly with Highman.
“The tour was a great bonding experience for us as a group,” she said. “For us being able to go out and see aspiring students that we can give them hope doing this, and pursuing this. I really liked the kids getting so excited!”
With the Symphonic Winds Concert and the Chamber Singers Tour, voice students have been constantly preparing and are excited to share the lovely repertoire for the spring concert, “Watching and Waiting.”
