Evergreen Community Charter School’s EMBE Marimba Band will be giving a farewell concert on Saturday, June 4th at Evergreen beginning at 6:00 pm. The event is a CD Release Party and Reunion Concert. After 14 years of directing EMBE, Sue Ford is stepping down as Evergreen’s band director. This event is open to the public and will feature music from the newest CD, “Stampede”, EMBE’s fifth recording.
Recorded by Adam Johnson of Sound Lab Studios, the new CD “Stampede” is a wild ride through polyrhythmic expressions. From traditional African songs to covers such as Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” and “Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid to originals composed by students themselves and a new song by Oso Rey called “Butterflies”.
EMBE is comprised of 7th and 8th graders who sing, dance and play homemade Zimbabwean style marimbas. EMBE has performed in the community many times over the years. They’ve appeared at LAAFF, Asheville City Market, Tressa’s, Warren Wilson Chapel, UNC-A, Highland Farms, Givens Estates, Montford Arts Festival, French Broad River Festival, LEAF, Diana Wortham Theater, Pritchard Park and more. Beyond Asheville, EMBE has performed at the Children’s Music Network Festival, the National Orff (Music Teacher) Conference, the NC Charter School Conference and the National Expeditionary Learning Conference.
Admission is free with the purchase of the new CD ($15 each). Funds raised will go towards Evergreen’s new concert band program, directed by Tonya Jones.

• Saturday, May 21 – Montford Arts Festival. Performance will begin at 10:30 at the Soco Stage
• Thursday, May 26 – WLOS Teacher Appreciation Dinner at Biltmore Park Hilton Hotel
• Saturday, June 4, 6-8 p.m. — CD Release Party/Concert/Alumni Reunion at Evergreen in the music room/gym.
