Buncombe Schools announces new leadership for 2016-17 school year

SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCES NEW BCS LEADERSHIP ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR

(ASHEVILLE)-Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin today announces six new administrative assignments for Buncombe County Schools and the Central Office for the 2016-17 school year. “Our school system continues to be a desirable destination for exceptional educational leaders,” said Dr. Baldwin. “I have every confidence these administrators will maintain the uncompromising level of excellence our families and communities have come to expect from their local public schools here in Buncombe County.” These assignments were unanimously approved by Board members at last night’s Regular Board Meeting. This morning, senior leadership went to the schools to formally announce each new principal to their respective faculty and staff. The list of the new administrators and their assignments for the 2016-17 school year are:

Department of Special Services: Amy Rhoney, current principal of T.C. Roberson High School since 2011, will be the new BCS Director of Special Services. Ms. Rhoney said she is excited about this wonderful new opportunity. “I will surely miss the T.C. Roberson students and staff, but I very much look forward to working with members of the Special Services Department to provide the best services to our schools and families.” Ms. Rhoney previously worked as the principal of Cane Creek Middle School (2007-11); assistant principal at Erwin High School (2000-07); and special education teacher at Erwin Middle School (2000) and East Burke Middle School in Burke County (1996-2000). She also worked in the speech department at Western Carolina Center (1995-96). Ms. Rhoney’s education includes a BS in Speech (1993), an MA in Special Education (1996), and an advanced degree in School Administration (2001) all from Appalachian State University.

Woodfin Elementary School: April Wright, current Assistant Principal at Candler Elementary School (50%) and an Elementary Instructional Coach (50%) since 2015 and 2012 respectively, will be the new principal at Woodfin Elementary School. She previously worked as a K-5 teacher at Bell Elementary School (2011-12), and a K-5 teacher at Fairview Elementary School (2006-11). Ms. Wright has a BS in Elementary Education (2006) and an MA in School Administration (2014) from Western Carolina University.

Pisgah Elementary School: Jeanann Yates, current principal of Central Elementary School in Haywood County since 2015, will be the new principal of Pisgah Elementary School. She previously worked as an assistant principal at Canton Middle School (2013-15), lead teacher at Meadowbrook Elementary School (2010-13), and 4th grade teacher (2005-10) and Title 1 teacher assistant (2000-05) at Clyde Elementary School all in Haywood County. Ms. Yates has a BA in Elementary Education (2005) from Mars Hill University and an MA in School Administration (2013) from Gardner-Webb University.

Haw Creek Elementary School: Jay Dale, current principal at Pisgah Elementary School since 2003, will be the new principal at Haw Creek Elementary School. He previously served as an assistant principal at W.D. Williams Elementary School (1999-2003), an assistant principal (1998), program coordinator (1994-98), Social Studies teacher (1991-94) at Buncombe Community School, and a geography teacher at Lakota Junior High School in Ohio (1989-91). Mr. Dale has a BA in History (1988) from Hanover College and an MA in Administration (1996) from Gardner-Webb College.

T.C. Roberson High School: Bonnie Johnston, current principal at Buncombe County Early College/Middle College since 2011, will be the new principal at T.C. Roberson High School. Her previous work experience includes: assistant principal at Roberson High School (2006- 11); a math teacher (2004-06), an academically gifted teacher (1995-96, 2000-04), and a math/science teacher (1996-2000) at Valley Springs Middle School; and a K-12 Instructional Specialist with NCDPI (1993-95). Ms. Johnston has a BA in Mathematics (1982) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MA in Administration (1993) from Western Carolina University.

Leicester Elementary School: Christopher “Chad” Upton, current principal at Woodfin Elementary School since 2013, will be the new principal at Leicester Elementary School. His previous work experience includes: assistant principal at Erwin High School (2013); an assistant principal at Glen Arden Elementary School (2012-13); principal at Fairview Elementary School (2008-11), assistant principal at Emma Elementary School (2006-08); assistant principal at Enka Middle School and Erwin Middle School (2004-06); and science teacher at Enka Middle School (1998-2004)
