Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina is seeking Asheville-area designers to compete in its popular Color Me Goodwill upcycled fashion show, which returns to The Orange Peel on April 21, 2023.
The 7th Annual Color Me Goodwill show will feature seven designers, each of whom will create a five-piece collection based on their selected color. Designers each receive $200 to shop for clothing and materials at local Goodwill stores, which they will deconstruct and repurpose to create their collections. Local hair stylists and makeup artists will assist designers and models the day of the show. Each collection features a past Goodwill program participant as one of its models.
“Color Me Goodwill celebrates both Asheville’s sustainable design community and the inspiring stories of individuals who’ve turned their lives around with the help of Goodwill’s employment programs,” says Jaymie Eichorn, chief marketing officer for Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina. “The show sells out every year, so it’s a unique platform for local designers to showcase their creativity.”
Two of the people who’ve helped shape Color Me Goodwill over the years will be on hand again this year: seasoned stage manager Alex Brown, and designer mentor Leanna Echeverri, who competed in Color Me Goodwill several times and won first place in 2018 and 2019.
A panel of expert judges will score the runway collections based on the construction of the garments, the skill and quality of the sewing, creative use of the original materials and innovative design. The first-place overall winner will receive $500. In addition, audience members may vote on their favorite designer to receive an audience choice award, with a prize of $200.
“Each year, the Color Me Goodwill audience is blown away by what designers are able to create using items from Goodwill,” Eichorn says. “We’re looking for designers who can bring innovative, unique perspectives, so we welcome applications from designers of all backgrounds.”
“Also, for the second year we are allowing designers to enter as a team of up to three people,” Eichorn continued. “We encourage local designers and artists to consider teaming up. That spirit of collaboration is very much in line with Goodwill’s mission, and it also offers designers an opportunity to expand their visions even further.”
Designers can apply to compete in Color Me Goodwill as individuals or as teams of up to three people. All levels of design experience are welcome. To apply, visit www.goodwillnwnc.org/cmgdesigners and complete the application materials by Monday, Nov. 14. Applicants will be asked to submit photos of their work or links to an online portfolio, which should be representative of their design skills.
