Asheville VA to unveil sculpture dedicated to medal of honor recipient

Press release from Charles George VA Medical Center:

On Saturday September 24, 2016 at 11 a.m., Charles George VA Medical Center will host an unveiling ceremony for a sculpture of the facility’s namesake, Private First Class Charles George, a native of Western North Carolina and member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

George was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1954 for conspicuous gallantry and outstanding courage above and beyond the call of duty during the Korean War.  The life-size bronze statue is one of two statues sculpted by James Spratt, a U.S. Navy Veteran who lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The other statue will be displayed in Cherokee and dedicated at a later date. The Tribal Council commissioned the statues and donated one to the medical center in commemoration of George and in recognition of all Veterans who have honorably served our nation.

The ceremony is open to the public.
