Candide Jones presents “In the Tree Top: A New Lullaby” at Malaprop’s, Jan. 16

PRESS RELEASE:

Spoiler alert: ‘Rock-a-Bye Baby’ has a new, happy ending more than 25 years in the making.

“When I first sang the lullaby to my infant son, I was bummed that the baby falls out of the tree and that was it,” said author Candide Jones, a former restaurant critic and academic press maven. “So I added some verses, found a fabulous illustrator and published my own version.”
In the Tree Top: A New Lullaby was published in October, capping a circuitous journey highlighted by leaps of faith, coincidence, the kindness of strangers and a mother’s desire.

Kirkus Reviews describes the book as “nicely calibrated for easy bedtime reading.”

Publishers Weekly says it’s “a soothing expansion of the familiar lullaby.”

The Children’s Book Review says, “Small eyes and fingers will delight in finding and pointing out the many hidden humans and animals that disguise themselves seamlessly in the nature-filled renderings.”

Jones will present her book—and the stories behind it—at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 16 at Malaprop’s Bookstore/Café at 55 Haywood Street, Asheville. She will be accompanied by illustrator Steve Emery and singer / songwriter Laurelyn Dossett, who has released a new CD of lullabies and ballads that includes the new rendition of “Rock-a-Bye Baby.”
