Starbucks employees at the Charlotte Street location kick off their second year of fundraising efforts to help send Asheville kids from low-income families to summer camp.

Last year the campaign raised over $1,500 via in-store collection jars and donations. The fundraiser is unique to the Charlotte Street location, which began as part of the company’s Global Month of Service campaign. “We sent three kids to summer camp last year. The response we got from the community was really positive, so we’re hoping to make this an ongoing project,” says Nicole Krieger, who initiated the campaign in 2014. Krieger adds that she was inspired by the documentary A Small Act.

The staff will seek community nominations when looking for the most deserving kids. Last year the recipients were nominated through help from the nonprofit Open Doors of Asheville and an Early Head Start program. They were chosen to attend Camp Rockmont and a week-long camp at the Appalachian Institute for Creative Learning.

Donations can be made at the Starbucks location at 62 Charlotte St. through May 31. For more information on how to donate or nominate a recipient, call 225-3753.
