Press release:
Are You Smarter Than An Elementary Student?
Fundraising Event on May 19th to Benefit Local Children’s Nonprofit(Asheville NC)- What was the name of the Charles Dickens novel where Miss Haversham was jilted at the alter? We can’t give you the answer, but we do have Great Expectations for the Children First/Communities In Schools (CIS) 5th annual fundraising trivia night, sponsored by the Omni Grove Park Inn!
Trivia lovers can test their general knowledge, win great prizes, bid on silent auction items and contribute to a local non-profit at the 5th annual Children First/Communities In Schools (CF/CIS) “Are You Smarter Than an Elementary Student?” trivia night-fundraising event on Thursday, May 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 pm at the Millroom in downtown Asheville (66 Asheland Ave). Teams made up from individuals, businesses and organizations will answer questions on current events, pop culture, science, geography and more.
Last year’s event had record turnout and put three-time winning team, Buncombe County School’s “The Bad Apples,” into detention as The Notorious RBG’s “The Lady Lawyers” were crowned valedictorians. The challenge has been raised to take this champion title away from them, as team recruitment is still open. Gather your smartest or most fun friends, family and colleagues, come up with a wacky name and get ready for some trivia fun!
For $300, you can register a team of up to six people. Each team member will receive refreshments from Hopey & Company, a free beverage from the Millroom, a complimentary pint glass, and lots of fun gifts from sponsors and a chance to bid on great silent auction items. Costumes are welcome! If you don’t want to join a team, but still join the fun and get all of the perks (silent auction, free pint glass, catered food) there are limited spaces for audience member for $30. Go to www.childrenfirstcisbc.org to register a team or register a spot in the audience.
Tracey Johnston-Crum, Director of Public Relations & Community Outreach for Omni Grove Park Inn, says that “When we started searching for partners, we wanted those direct care organizations that truly made a difference in the lives of people in Buncombe County. We chose Children First/CIS because they make a huge impact in the lives of children, and they really shine in our community.”
Event Details: Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with free refreshments from Hopey and Company and a chance to bid on silent auction items donated from local businesses, restaurants, artists and music clubs. The game begins at 6:30 p.m. and goes until 8:30 p.m. Free parking is available across the street from the Millroom.
Team prizes include: Free brunch passes from Omni Grove Park Inn, passes to Zen Tubing, passes to Navitat Canopy Adventures, tickets to N.C. Stage, gift certificates from local restaurants and spa companies, personal yoga sessions and much more.
All proceeds will benefit Children First/Communities In Schools (CIS) – a local non-profit with over 40-years experience of working with low-income children and their families. Children First/CIS is an organization that believes all children should have the opportunity to meet their full potential, and helps them meet this potential by providing services, education supports and public policy advocacy in their homes, schools and communities.
“With one in four of our local children living in poverty and 54% of our students on the free and reduced lunch program-a leading poverty indicator, the need in Buncombe County is great,” says Allison Jordan, Children First/CIS Executive Director. “This event is a lot of fun and we all have a great time, but the funds raised during the event will go to help serious issues in our community.”
To register a team, find out more details or register as an audience member, contact Kaitlyn Breiten, Children First/CIS Resource Coordinator at 828-259-9717 or go to www.childrenfirstcisbc.org.
