WHO: Over 100 runners/singers will participate in the second Run Sing Thing, a 5k fun run led by musicians, in which participants will run and sing together to raise funds and awareness for Arts For Life.
WHY: Research has shown that moving in sync strengthens interpersonal bonds. Some scholars even suggest that activities such as music and dance evolved as a technology of social cohesion. “It brings us together,” says Run Sing Thing Founder Jenny Greer Fares. “What the Run Sing Thing does is combine the benefits of synchrony with the endorphins released through running and singing. When people sing together, their hearts tend to beat in sync, and singing causes our bodies to produce oxytocin, the bonding hormone. Singing triggers an endorphin release — merely listening to music does not.”
PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES:
● Groups of people running and singing together along the French Broad river in a call-and-response format led by musicians
● Children working on art projects under the pavilion
● Runners in matching t-shirts watching bands play after they run
TO PARTICIPATE: Registration is limited to the first 100 runners/singers, but anyone can participate in the after party, which is free to the public (suggested donation to Arts For Life). Runners may register now at runsingthing.com
