Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler May 30-June 5: Bernie and the Undefeated DD Huntsman UPDATED

It’s a two and two week — two mainstream titles and two art titles (there’s a flood of art titles just now), and all in all, it looks like the art titles are the better deal, though it’s just possible that one of the mainstreamers will be a pleasant surprise. The other one? Far less likely. In fact, it’s so less likely that no one booked the lesser one after all. However, something else is!

Cranky Hanke’s Screening Room: The Strangest Serial Ever Made

I’d seen The Lost City once before, so I knew just how seriously deranged it was, but it had been a while. So this past weekend I decided to check it out a little — mostly to be sure it played OK, which is often a dicey proposition on these public domain titles. That’s really all I planned on doing. Honest. And I know that these things tend to become wearisome if you watch too much of one in one sitting. (The rule should be two episodes max.) Imagine my surprise when I ended up watching all four hours worth of barely coherent and totally unhinged nonsense.

Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler April 24-May 1: Being Flynn with a Bike Footnote

This is a week of riches where the art titles are concerned. It’s not all that unusual that we get three art movies in one week. It is unusual when we get three of them I’d classify as being in the “must-see” realm. And it’s even more unusual when it happens in April. For that matter, there are also four other movies of the mainstream variety headed our way. Offhand, they seem likely to be shy of the “must-see” realm.

ActionFest Sneak Peek

ActionFest is the little film festival that could — except it’s not so little anymore. Interest and attendance has grown since it made its debut three years ago. It’s attracted national — and even international — attention, becoming the film event linked to Asheville. Perhaps this is because, like Asheville, ActionFest is unique. This year the festival has made its way into downtown, with the opening night film being shown at the Diana Wortham Theater and the closing night one at the Fine Arts Theatre. Last year it was the local premiere of one film — 13 Assassins — that ended up on both Justin Souther’s and my Ten Best list. This year — based on the titles I’ve already seen — it may have even more.

Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler April 11-17: ActionFest Lockout Stooges Raid in the Woods

OK, look: It’s ActionFest weekend— what more do you really need to know prior to Monday? There are more movies than you can shake a stick at (if you care for that sort of thing) without having to even consider the rather grim prospect of such things as The Three Stooges. And I’ll be taking a sneak peak at that tomorrow. But for now, let’s go ahead and consider the week on the whole.

ActionFest Update Updated—New Titles, Guests and Events

We’ve had more titles and what-not announced for what is shaping up to the biggest and best ActionFest to date. This latest press release should just about cover it (when combined with the previous announcements), but that doesn’t preclude others things yet to come. Not mentioned here, for example, is the Asheville Film Society/Mountain Xpress showing of Brian DePalma’s The Fury starring Kirk Douglas, John Cassavetes and Amy Irving with an introduction and Q&A from the film’s stunt coordinator Mickey Gilbert. (That happens at 7:30 p.m. on Fri., April 13 at The Carolina.) And I’ll be back with a sneak preview on the titles I’ve managed to get an early look at. So keep watching for more information. But for now…

Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler March 28-April 3: Rampart Salmon Fishing in the Mirror

There may be nothing as keenly anticipated this week as The Hunger Games, but there’s hardly a shortage of titles. There are five new ones, in fact — and here’s a week where the art titles edge out the mainstream ones, at least in number. Just exactly how that will play out at the box office is, of course, another matter.

ActionFest Update—More Titles! More Cool Stuff!

Once again, as promised, I’m passing on the information from ActionFest as soon as I get it—or get it cleared for publication. They’ve come up with some more movies to ponder, not to mention the information that opening and closing night titles will branching out to play downtown venues, the Diana Wortham and Fine Arts Theatre respectively. Now, read on…

Cranky Hanke’s Weekly Reeler March 21-27: Chico & Rita’s Crazy Horse Thin Ice Hunger Games

If it was measured in sheer quantity, the indie and art titles would win this coming weekend hands down—at least locally. There are three of them—and something else harder to quantify—up against one mainstream film. By rights, it ought to be a blood bath. And it will be, but with that solo juggernaut that is The Hunger Games the easy victor.
