ABCCM Celebrates Veterans Day

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Veteran residents of the Veterans Restoration Quarters (VRQ) and Steadfast House will be recognized on Friday, Nov. 11 in celebration of Veterans Day. ABCCM has 250 beds for homeless male veterans living at the VRQ and 10 beds for female veterans at Steadfast House.

The media is invited to events at the VRQ, which are not open to the public, and other events taking place off-campus. The VRQ is located at 1329 Tunnel Road in Asheville.

VETERANS DAY EVENTS:

  • Volunteers from the Knights of Columbus will hold a pig roast for lunch at the VRQ. The pig will be roasting all night, but volunteers will start cooking in earnest at 4 a.m. and will also be preparing side dishes all morning. Lunch is served at noon.
  • Volunteers from G.E. Aviation will cook and serve a hot breakfast at the VRQ. Typically there is a cold breakfast on Fridays, but the volunteers wanted to make breakfast special for the veterans. Breakfast is served at 7 a.m.
  • Olive Garden on Airport Road has invited VRQ and Steadfast House veterans for free dinners Friday. ABCCM will provide free transportation for all veterans at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • American Legion Post 526, which is based at the VRQ, will man a POW/MIA table starting at 10 a.m. at the Applebee’s on Tunnel Road. Members will stand watch over the table, which is set for one person in order to remember veterans who are still missing. Post 526 is the only American Legion post in the country that is based in a transitional living facility for homeless veterans.
