Press release from The Altamont Theatre:
We are very sorry to tell everyone that The Altamont Theatre is being forced to close at the end of this year. The owner of the building is bulldozing our beloved theatre to build more expensive short term condos for tourists. This is not what we want, and we were very surprised and devastated to receive this news, just a couple months ago. It’s a complete turnaround from where we were expecting this business to go and despite all the hard work and money we have put into The Altamont Theatre to get to where we are today, there is nothing we can do to save the place. To say that we are incredibly bummed out would be an understatement.
Many of you have been coming to The Altamont Theatre for years and we consider you part of the Altamont family and we know that you are as sad as we are about this news. And it’s really a big loss to the city of Asheville. We have been bringing a diverse, eclectic and unmatched lineup of music, in a truly intimate, amazing sounding listening room of which there is no equal in the city. Which is one of the reasons we can’t just pick The Altamont up and move it somewhere else.
Richard, I’m sorry my friend…THANK YOU for what you have done for our city and the INCREDIBLE experiences that we have had at the Altamont…best of luck moving forward and the next direction you will take.
