From Mars Hill University:
Weizenblatt Gallery Exhibition Features Four Artists
The upcoming exhibition at Mars Hill University’s Weizenblatt Gallery features the work of four artists, including one who is a Mars Hill student. The exhibit of works by Claire Sordoni, Mark Flowers, Kristy Higby and Titus Mills runs November 28 through December 16. The opening reception is Wednesday, November 30, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The gallery is located in Moore Fine Arts Building and is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
The drawings of Asheville artist and teacher Claire Sordoni’s “Into the Garden: The Genius of Genesis” illustrate the biblical story of the Garden of Eden as a map of the human body, with the heart as the garden and the circulatory system as rivers. Sordoni depicts Adam and Eve as “the masculine and feminine parts interacting within each person.” She says the work integrates her interests in painting, psychology and meditation.
“A Bridge Between” is the exhibit of Mark Flowers and Kristy Higby. Flowers is a painter whose work is found in 26 public and more than 300 private collections. He describes his work as “visual poetry making sense of the world around me.” Higby’s works in the exhibit are artists’ books — works which take the form of printed books but often include sculptural or other dimensional aspects. She works in book arts, drawing and digital arts, and says the artists’ books help connect her interest in digital imaging with her “aesthetic preference to work with certain physical materials, tools, and processes.” Flowers and Higby live in Asheville and operate Mountain TEA Studios.
Titus Mills is presenting his Senior Art Exhibition, “Beyond the Literal.” Titus is a senior art major at Mars Hill University. His photographic exhibit will be displayed in the Glass Gallery, adjacent to the main entrance of Weizenblatt Gallery.
Established in 1991 as a gift from the estate of Dr. Sprinza Weizenblatt, Asheville physician and philanthropist, the primary function of the Weizenblatt Gallery at Mars Hill University is to educate through art. The Weizenblatt Gallery hosts exhibitions of work in a variety of styles and mediums by artists of local and national prominence. The gallery’s operational hours are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. during the academic spring and fall semesters. The general public, school classes and other groups are welcome.
