Asheville Buskers Collective to draw attention to proposed city ordinance changes

From an Asheville Buskers Collective press release:

Asheville Buskers Collective to draw attention to proposed city ordinance changes

The Asheville Buskers Collective has announced its plans to host a “Music Walk” culminating in a superband performance this Friday at 5 p.m. The walk will begin at the U.S. Cellular Center at  87 Haywood St. in downtown Asheville and promenade through Pritchard Park, terminating at the Asheville Art Museum by Vance Monument.

An impromptu street orchestra of local buskers, musicians and acrobats will perform in order to raise awareness and rally solidarity for the protection of busking rights in Asheville. The spectacle, which will rally solidarity for ABC’s efforts to influence city policy pertaining to the drafting and enforcement of busking ordinances, is planned in anticipation of the ABC’s upcoming presentation — in partnership with the Asheville Downtown Association— before Asheville City Council’s Public Safety Subcommittee meeting the following Monday. The ABC and ADA will present a series of recommendations regarding changes to the existing city ordinances pertaining to busking in the Central Business District.

ABC formed last summer in response to a study of busking regulations in other cities conducted by the Asheville Police Department and the series of recommendations it produced. ABC’s agenda is organized into three prongs:

1) To remove the legal association of busking with panhandling
2) To establish a legal method to sell their original media on the streets,
3) To protect the vibrancy of Asheville’s busking scene by emphasizing Asheville’s busking community as a self-regulating entity capable of addressing the concerns of the City, downtown business owners, and police department with more precision and discretion than top-down regulation can provide.
