A shoeless occasion, the sock hop gained momentum in the ’50s for enabling school-age kids to cut a rug without harming the highly varnished gym floor. The Bywater’s forthcoming Spring Fling Rock ’n’ Roll Sock Hop honors this music and dance tradition (although the bar’s indoor-outdoor standing areas may not need such meticulous protection) by hosting rockers Red Honey and DJ Biig Poppa for an evening of entertainment. A photo booth, “The Twist” dance competition, a Twister (the game) competition and beer and draft root beer floats made with The Hop ice cream complete the retro vibe. The party, which includes eats by Pho Ya Belly food truck, kicks off on Friday, June 5, with feisty rock band Red Honey starting at 9 p.m. and DJ Biig Poppa taking over at 11 p.m. $5 at the door. bywaterbar.com.
