Press release:

Wolfe Memorial “Telling Our Tales” Student
Writing Competition Now Open

Asheville, N.C. – The Thomas Wolfe Memorial is calling on young writers to join in the celebration of Thomas Wolfe’s 116th birthday by submitting a work of fiction. The “Telling Our Tales” Student Writing Competition is now open for three groups: grades 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

The original work must be inspired by the Thomas Wolfe short story, “The Far and the Near,” that was first published in July 1935 in Cosmopolitan magazine. Wolfe supplemented his income with short stories and “The Far and Near” is the tale of a railroad engineer who upon retirement stops at a house he has passed daily for years, greeting the ladies there as he went by. He discovers the reality and his vision are not the same.

Cash awards will be given to the first, second and third place winners in each age group. Submissions must be hand delivered, emailed or mailed to Wolfe Memorial by Saturday, Sept. 24, at 5 p.m. Winners will be invited to present their stories and accept the award at the program Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m.

The story, guidelines, submission form, ideas and links are online at http://wolfememorial.com/for-teachers/student-writing-contest/.
