Published poet Tracey Schmidt didn’t plan to be a poet at all. She already had a successful career as a photographer, and her exhibit “The Awakening of Turtle Island: Portraits of Native Americans” has toured throughout the Southeast. However, after moving to Asheville in 2000 she discovered the healing power of verse while participating in a workshop on the poetry of grief at Malaprop’s bookstore and found an irresistible new calling.
She’ll present a reading her poetry plus works by Rumi and Hafiz at the White Horse Black Mountain on Thursday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m. in support of the Standing Rock Water Protectors, accompanied by musicians Bob Hinkle, Michael Ivey, Denton Bragg, Phil Ludwig. Dakota Brown, a young Cherokee woman, will recount her personal experiences at the site of the Dakota Access Pipeline, and photos from Tracey Schmidt’s Native American-inspired multi-media installation will also be on display.
Donations will be sent to Rosetta Braun, of Rosetta’s Kitchen in Asheville, who is currently in North Dakota helping to feed the Water Protectors.
Show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.
