UPDATE: Faces in the crowd: WNC crowdfunding initiatives

UPDATE: The Volt per Octaves have relaunched their campaign, which now aims to raise $1,500 by Oct. 28. Here is the story we ran on Aug. 3.

Crowdfunding platforms make it possible for individuals and organizations of any size to harness social networks and raise start-up capital for projects that might otherwise fail due to lack of funding. Each week, Xpress highlights notable WNC crowdsourcing initiatives that may inspire readers to become new faces in the crowd.

BEER TIE

Leave it to an Ashevillian to invent a neoprene necktie that doubles as a condensation-combatting beer holder. Reuben Hollifield’s stylish “Beer Tie” will “dress up yer drinkin’,” according to his fundraising page. Its highly functional design may soon make it a festival staple in Asheville and beyond. Hollifield aims to raise $7,800 by Aug. 23, to place his initial manufacturing order.

THE VOLT PER OCTAVES STUDIO ALBUM

Asheville-based trio The Volt per Octaves is a family affair consisting of parents Nick and Anna Montoya and their pre-teen daughter Ava. The family moved to Asheville when Nick accepted a position with Moog Music, and now the whole band performs on a slew of Moog instruments. The Volt per Octaves aim to raise $5,000 by Aug. 7, to record and release their fourth studio album, “Joining the Circuits.”

Send your crowdsource campaign news to kmcreynolds@mountainx.com. A limited number of campaigns will be highlighted each week, at Xpress’ discretion. Campaigns must be locally based, should represent a current project with an achievable goal. Conditions are subject to change.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
